ACT

  • The ACT is made up of four sections with an optional fifth section. It is scored on a scale of 1-36, except the writing portion, which is scored between 1 and 12.  Students receive a score for each subsection, and then a composite score.  The composite score is the average of all subscores, excluding the writing score.     Following a 10-minute break, the optional 40-minute writing test will be administered

     

    Juniors take the ACT in the spring at Valley Park during the school day, but are encouraged to take the test as many times as they are able. The ACT is offered nationally seven times throughout the year, in September, October, December, February, April, June and July.  Please see the chart below for the ACT dates during 20/21 as well as their registration deadlines. Juniors are encouraged to begin taking the ACT in February, when most material covered by the test has been covered in their classwork.

    There is a fee associated with taking the ACT. For the test without writing, the fee is $55.  To take the ACT with writing, the fee is $70.  If you qualify for Free and Reduced lunch, please have your student come see me to get a test waiver (each qualifying student gets 2). Please note: Juniors taking the ACT at VPHS will have their fee covered by the district.

     

    On the day of the test, students should make sure to bring a printed copy of their admission ticket (only for National testing), a photo ID (driver’s license or plastic school ID will work), #2 pencils (not mechanical), an eraser, a calculator acceptable by the ACT, and extra batteries. Students should arrive by 7:45 AM for an 8 AM test, as the doors close at 8 and students will not be admitted after this point.
