Elementary Program for ELLs
ELL services in elementary school are provided through a mixed pull-out and push-in program using Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) methodology for content-based English instruction. Some students are pulled out of their general classroom to work on speaking, listening, reading and writing in English with the ELL teacher in a small group. Other students are supported by the ELL teacher in their general education classroom. Many students receive both types of support. The schedule of this program is made so that students do not miss important content area or specialist instruction. The ELL teacher and classroom teacher work collaboratively to develop and instructional program that will be most beneficial to meet the language and academic needs of each student.
Secondary Program for ELLs
ELL services in middle school and high school are provided within the students’ regular class schedule using TESOL methodology for content-based English instruction. One class period with the ELL teacher may be provided to the ELL students to help them improve their social and academic language. Students may also receive content-based instruction from the ELL teacher, or support from the ELL teacher within their general education classes. The ELL teacher and classroom teacher work collaboratively to develop an instructional program that will be most beneficial to meet the language and academic needs of each student.
