Special School District

  • District Overview

Hailed as “one of the great success stories in public education in the St. Louis region” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, SSD has become an icon for special education and technical education providers over the past half century.
Founded in 1957, SSD’s unique status as a public school district ensures that all local students receive equal access to quality special education regardless of their socio-economic background or the neighborhood in which they live.
SSD staff provides special education services to students in 265 public schools in 22 school districts in St. Louis County.
About 97 percent of the students who receive special education services from SSD attend a school in their local school district.

The Special School District Parent Advisory Council

The SSD PAC consists of five parents or guardians – one member and four alternates – from each of the 22 St. Louis County school districts and from each of the five SSD special education schools. The parents or guardians of students receiving special education services in that district or school elect SSD PAC members.

The PAC consults with SSD's Superintendent, staff and Board of Education on issues involving the rights and concerns of families of children with disabilities.

The SSD PAC typically meets at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at SSD's Central Office at 12110 Clayton Road in Town and Country. All are welcome to attend. For upcoming meeting dates, visit the SSD website at https://www.ssdmo.org/leadership/pac.html
