Board names next high school principal

Dr. Ryan Luhning The Valley Park School District Board of Education has approved the hiring of Dr. Ryan Luhning as the next principal of Valley Park High School beginning in the 2019-20 school year. Dr. Luhning was selected after a rigorous interview process that included multiple rounds of interviews with parents, teachers, and administrators.


Dr. Tad Savage, assistant superintendent, says Dr. Luhning was ultimately selected for his leadership, vision, experience, and reputation for building relationships with teachers and students.


“Dr. Luhning is a talented leader that will contribute to our mission of high achievement for every child through excellence and equity every day,” said Dr. Savage.


Dr. Luhning has a genuine passion for leadership and service.


"I believe that the most important trait of a leader is that they must serve all," said Dr. Luhning. "All students deserve a high-quality education that allows them the opportunity to pursue their passions following graduation. Being a part of a school like Valley Park High School which looks at the whole child and helps guide them in their interests excites me."


Dr. Luhning has been in the Clayton School District since 2006 where he’s served in multiple administrative roles including assistant principal of Clayton High School since 2013. He began his teaching career at St. John Vianney High School where he also served as department chair and dean of students. Dr. Luhning received his undergraduate degree in Education from the University of Missouri St. Louis, his Master’s in Education Technology from Webster University, his Master’s in Education Leadership from Lindenwood University, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Maryville University.


Dr. Luhning grew up in the St. Louis area and has been married for 16 years to his wife, Cynthia. They are the proud parents to a 14-year-old son Troy and a 12-year-old son Travis.  When Dr. Luhning is not enjoying his children's sports games, band and orchestra concerts, and robotics competitions, he enjoys running, playing golf, fishing, and spending time with his family.
