VPMS Annual Collection for Valley Park Fire & Rescue
Marianne Wecker's Hawk Time, which includes grades 6-8, collected snacks and made cards for Valley Park Fire & Rescue in honor of the National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11.
Wecker's classes have collected donations for VPFR for over ten years. Each year, they make several visits to the firehouse for service learning, including one a few weeks after the donation. During these visits, the students work side-by-side with the crew using their tools and equipment while gaining insight into what being a first responder really means.
Wecker comes from a military family, so taking the opportunity to teach students to support our first responders comes naturally. "Anyone who puts their life on the line for strangers deserves all of our support," she says.
Wecker points out that her students were born after the attacks on September 11, 2001. Kicking off the collection prompted questions and research for the students. During the drive, they made posters and announcements with information about the day.
